A few sorcery spells for 2d20 Conan

I wanted to make a couple of spells that would be easy and evocative to use in the heat of running a combat. This should make my Sorcerers more terrifying. All of these spells can be enhanced by adding more momentum to the casting. I decided that adding a close area of effect would be 3 momentum and adding the Blinding quality would be 2 momentum. I haven’t tried these yet, so that Area of Effect might be underpriced.

Dismember Spells

It is important to remember that it is only a 0 momentum spend to make any Display attack (for example Sorcerous Might, see page 125) Intense. The death of a target with this spell causes 4CD Vicious 2 mental damage on everyone within Close

Cloud of Knives

Difficulty D1 + 4 momentum (or D5)

Does 4CD Vicious 1, Piercing 3, Area (Wound of Sorcery 1, Area of Effect(close)). The primitive god of knives is called upon and an whirlwind of small shards of obsidian is created.

Bite of Set

Difficulty: D1 + 3 momentum (or D4)

Does 6CD Piercing 3, Persistent 1 (Brutal Force 2, Lingering Pain). The god Set is called upon to bite the sorcerer’s enemies. A poisoned wound will appear on the victim.

Cloud of Miasma

Difficulty: D1 + 4 momentum (or D5)

Does 4CD Piercing 3, Persistent 1, Area (Lingering Pain, Area of Effect (Close-+3 momentum)). A choking cloud of greenish gas is created.

Morrigan’s Bite

Difficulty: D1 +2 momentum (or D3)

Does 4CD Piercing 3, Blinding, (Blinding Quality). This spell strikes at the victim’s eyes, as a crow does to the dead. Instead of causing a Wound, it causes the Blind condition.

Claws of the Demon

Difficulty: D1 + 4 Momentum (or D5)

Does 6CD Piercing 3, Vicious 1, +3CD Resolve on Death (Brutal Force 2, Wound of Sorcery, Strike at the Will). This spell causes invisible demons to tear at the target, who will be torn to pieces and scattered around by invisible claws upon death. This is similar to what happened to Von Junst in the marketplace in Baghdad.

Enslave/Gaze of Set Spells

You have to be able to speak to the target, which must be able to hear you. Also, you should look your victim in the eye or the difficulty is +1D. Target resists with D2 Discipline test, the victim is Staggered on a failure. Alternately, the handler may resist with a D2 Animal Handling test.

+1 momentum for each additional Toughened or 2 Minions

Turn on your friends

Difficulty: D1 + 3 momentum

Victim will immediately turn their weapons on their companions.

  1. Hi,

    Great article!

You’ve made Area a +3 momentum effect and I think you’re being too conservative (i.e., it should be cheaper). Let’s look at one of the petty enchantments for a sec: Set’s Serpent [acid] D1 to make, does 3CD damage, and is Persistent, Fearsome. Simple Acid is D2 to make, does 4CD damage, and is Area, Incendiary.

One could argue back and forth about the relative value of Persistent, Fearsome, Area, and Incendiary, but you’re making Area on sorcery spells cost enough momentum that you could have made Blistering Acid: D4 to make, does 5CD damage, and is Area, Persistent, Incendiary, and Fearsome.

It’s too cheap to make it +1 and +3 is too expensive, so I’d make Area +2 momentum, myself.

  2. Hi David!

I set it at +3 momentum because I had envisioned it as an area effect, not Area quality. So it affects everything within Close. Its actually probably too cheap when used that way. For Area quality, +2 is probably the right number of momentum.

    Thanks!
    Toby
